Marking Out his territory
When you take your Scotty out for a walk, he will want to stop every few
yards to have a sniff about, if any other dogs have been in that area he
will be able to detect the scent of them from the urine they left behind.
The last dog left his mark saying this is my territory keep out !
However your Scotty will disagree, and will overwrite the marking with
his own.
Chemical communication will give the dog accurate information on
territory and gender of animal. Urine marking is one major way dogs, mainly
the males, will stake out territory when out and about.
Your Scotty has a set of glands that hold the marking chemical, these are
called anal glands and he has two, one each side of his anus.
The glands
will excrete when ever he goes to the toilet, however should you ever see
your Scotty scooting along the floor rubbing his backside on the ground,
this could mean his glands are blocked and you need to visit a vet to have
them emptied.
